LETTERS To the extent there is any validity in the Foreign Minister's claim that many or most people arriving by boat are "economic migrants", Senator Carr might include in any review he prompts an assessment of how Australia's foreign policy has contributed to the economic hardship causing those people to flee Iran ("Refugee Review Tribunal 'gets it right'", July 3). Australia has gone along with sanctions against Iran aimed at stopping it getting nuclear weapons. Those swingeing sanctions indiscriminately affect the whole population. So far they have not been effective. That this is so points at a massive failure of US diplomacy, ongoing since the Tehran hostages crisis of 1979-81, whereby...
